Write a carry brief before looking at dimensions

Create a load list with counts and approximate dimensions for essential cards, folded or unfolded notes as relevant, receipts, coins, and any other intended contents. Mark each as essential, occasional, or excluded. Add the intended carrying location—front pocket, back pocket, jacket, or bag—and measure a comfortable existing wallet both empty and in normal use.

This brief prevents “more slots” from becoming an automatic advantage. Added capacity may change thickness, access, and comfort. Conversely, a compact exterior does not prove that required contents fit. Treat every listed capacity statement as seller wording until the exact item can be assessed with a method appropriate to the load.

Use safe substitutes for a remote capacity check

Ask for measurements rather than requesting personal documents in photographs. A seller can demonstrate pockets with blank, non-identifying cards or paper templates when appropriate. No image should expose names, account numbers, addresses, signatures, or other personal details. A demonstration shows access at that moment; it does not guarantee long-term behavior or the buyer’s exact load.

Screen the candidate with a wallet decision table

Pass each row independently. A good dimension record cannot compensate for missing return rights, and a flexible return policy cannot repair absent object continuity. Unknown fields remain visible until resolved.

Request an exterior-to-interior evidence sequence

Start with a current image of the complete closed wallet beside a neutral dated reference, followed by front, back, spine or fold, every outer edge and corner, closure positions, and any attachment point. Continue with the complete open interior, each pocket and slot, pocket mouths, lining areas if present, fold stress zones, visible markings, and every disclosed flaw. The sequence should make it possible to follow one object throughout.

Ask whether any card, insert, chain, strap, packaging, or other piece is included, and require it to appear with the same item reference. Photographs document visible state only. They do not independently establish composition, origin, hidden pocket condition, repair quality, durability, or identity. If an image appears to come from a different object or time, request a new continuity set rather than patching the gap with another listing.

Map wear where hands and contents create contact

Record edge rounding, corner wear, fold creasing, pocket stretching, lining separation, staining, tears, loose stitching, closure resistance, and marks around attachment points as visible observations. Do not assign a cause or predict remaining life. Ask about cleaning, conditioning, repairs, replaced pieces, reshaping, and storage history, but preserve those responses as sourced statements.

Measure the object in usable states

Request closed height, width, and thickness with the item empty, plus open dimensions where they affect access. If the seller provides a loaded measurement, record the exact substitute load and keep it separate from the empty state. For chain or strap representations, request end-to-end and usable attachment measurements with endpoints shown, while avoiding any assumption about composition or load tolerance.

Compare against the existing wallet and intended carrying space using the same orientation. Make a paper rectangle for footprint and a separate thickness block if helpful, clearly labeled as a planning proxy. A paper model cannot reproduce stiffness, edge shape, closure pressure, weight distribution, or pocket access. Use it to reject obvious dimensional mismatches, not to promise comfort.

Calculate delivered and usable cost

List the stated amount, delivery, tax, possible duty or brokerage, platform and payment fees, currency conversion, inspection cost, and only documented estimates for cleaning or repair. Use separate low, expected, and high scenarios when a fee is uncertain. If the item needs an attachment or insert to meet the carry brief, include only a supported compatible option and retain compatibility as unresolved until checked.

Set a high-scenario ceiling before negotiation. Do not include hoped-for resale proceeds or treat a high price as evidence. A wallet that fails the essential carry brief has low decision value regardless of headline amount, while an inexpensive candidate can still be unsuitable if condition, payment protection, or returns are weak.

Align inspection with return rules

Save the written policy and confirm whether inserting blank cards or paper templates, operating the closure, unfolding compartments, removing packaging, or detaching included pieces changes eligibility. Record the deadline trigger, notice channel, destination, tracking requirement, condition standard, refund deductions, and responsibility for delivery or import costs. Ask questions before payment.

At receipt, preserve the parcel label and unopened package, then record the opening sequence, exact wallet, included pieces, exterior, interior, dimensions, closures, and condition zones. Use only non-identifying test contents and avoid cleaning, repair, conditioning, or modification until the return decision is complete. Compare every result with the saved listing and keep communications with the payment record.
